Oklahoma Outdoor Activities

A Haven for Adventure and Sport

Oklahoma, with its diverse landscapes ranging from the rolling plains of the Great Plains to the rugged beauty of its four mountain ranges, is a treasure trove for outdoor enthusiasts. From adrenaline-pumping adventures to serene nature escapes, here's how you can immerse yourself in the Sooner State's outdoor offerings, with a special focus on hunting and fishing.

Hiking and Biking: Trails for Every Explorer

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge: This area offers hiking trails like the Charon's Garden Trail, known for its unique rock formations and wildlife sightings. Biking enthusiasts can navigate trails that showcase Oklahoma's scenic beauty, from historic byways to mountain paths.
  • Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness: In Tulsa, this park provides over 30 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, offering panoramic views of the city and a chance to connect with nature right at urban's edge.

Water Sports: Lakes and Rivers Aplenty

  • Grand Lake and Lower Mountain Fork River: Ideal for kayaking, canoeing, or trying your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. The clear waters of the Lower Mountain Fork are also a haven for year-round trout fishing.
  • Lake Eufaula: Oklahoma's largest lake is a mecca for water sports, including swimming, boating, and fishing. With nature trails around, it's also a spot for a peaceful hike.

Hunting: A Tradition Steeped in Nature

  • Controlled Hunts: Oklahoma's Department of Wildlife Conservation offers controlled hunts for unique opportunities like elk in the Wichita Mountains or antelope in the Panhandle. These hunts are drawn by lottery, providing a chance to hunt in less accessible areas.
  • Public Hunting Lands: With over 1.6 million acres available, Oklahoma offers vast hunting grounds for deer, turkey, quail, and waterfowl. Areas like the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area in Broken Bow provide a secluded, forested experience for hunters.
  • Youth and Special Hunts: The state encourages young hunters through youth-specific hunting seasons, fostering a tradition of outdoor sports among new generations.

Fishing: Where the Water Teems with Life

  • Bassmaster Tournaments: Grand Lake is famous for its fishing tournaments, drawing anglers from across the nation for its bass fishing prowess.
  • Paddlefish: Unique to Oklahoma, the paddlefish snagging season at Keystone Lake is an exciting challenge for those looking to catch this prehistoric fish.
  • Trout Fishing: Beavers Bend State Park near Broken Bow is renowned for its stocked trout streams, offering a serene fishing experience amidst beautiful scenery.

Adventure Sports: For the Thrill-Seekers

  • Zip-lining: Places like 777 Zip in Davis offer exhilarating views of the Arbuckle Mountains as you zip through the air.
  • Rock Climbing and Bouldering: The rugged terrain of Red Rock Canyon or Robbers Cave State Park provides natural climbing routes for all skill levels.

Bird Watching and Wildlife Observation

  • Red Slough Wildlife Management Area: A hotspot for birdwatchers with over 300 species of native birds, including migratory species.
  • Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge: From April to October, visitors can dig for selenite crystals while also enjoying bird watching in this unique environment.

Cultural Outdoor Experiences

  • First Friday Art Walks: Combine your outdoor experience with cultural immersion by attending art walks in Oklahoma City or Tulsa, where galleries open their doors for the public to enjoy.

Oklahoma's outdoor activities cater to all, from those seeking solitude in nature to adventurers looking for the next big thrill. Whether you're casting a line, tracking a trophy, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, Oklahoma invites you to explore its vast, varied landscapes. Remember, for hunting and fishing, licenses are required, and the state's conservation efforts ensure these activities remain sustainable for years to come. So gear up, and let Oklahoma's great outdoors become your playground.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
