Where to Hunt Mountain Goat

Where to Hunt Mountain Goat

There are around 100,000 total mountain goats in North America, so figuring out where to hunt mountain goat isn’t all that difficult. Securing a goat tag is the hard part unless you choose an area with over-the-counter tags.

Where to Hunt Mountain Goat

Mountain goats are the largest mammals found in their high-altitude alpine and sub-alpine habitats, which can exceed elevations of 13,000 feet. However, in some areas, such as coastal southern Alaska, they live near sea level. In these coastal areas of Alaska and BC we offer lower elevation hunts that can be very appealing, but availability is an issue. Contact us for more information.

Several states within the continental US have huntable populations, but tags are extremely limited. Roughly 80% are found in Alaska and British Columbia. Goat tags in these regions are readily available, even over-the-counter in most units.

Best Places for Trophy Sized Goats

If you’re wondering where to hunt mountain goat, the Boone and Crockett entries are overwhelmingly dominated by two locations.

A look to the Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young records reveals that that British Columbia dominates in producing book animals. Even though BC is the clear winner, it’s followed fairly closely by coastal Alaska. Couple that with OTC tags, and this makes choosing where to hunt mountain goat a no brainer. However, it doesn’t hurt to apply in other places either.

The Top 100 Records also include a few states in the Lower 48.

Both British Columbia and Alaska are very appealing places to hunt goats, but if you want to hunt anywhere else you’ll need to play the odds and try to draw a tag.

Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Colorado, and Nevada are all the next best contenders for where to hunt mountain goat. Applying is fairly straightforward, but can be confusing if you don’t know the regulations in each state. We can help you with an application strategy.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
