HUNT REPORT: Alaska Unguided Moose

HUNT REPORT

HUNT: Unguided Moose Hunt in Alaska
CONSULTANT Russ Meyer | OUTDOORS INTERNATIONAL

September, 2017

We brought all of our own gear and equipment. It is easy to do, and I’d do that again. Here’s how to prepare. With all of our gear, guns, and ourselves we were still under the 800 pound flight limit. I think we were 742 lbs and we had everything we needed and then some.

It was a lake hunt and we flew in on a Beaver on floats.

The lake was 100 yards wide and 1.5 miles long… more like a river. We hunted a very flat area without any trees. Basically just a bog with lots of alders and grasses. Finding an open area and calling is really the only method of hunting. Walking was difficult much of the time and covering ground was difficult. The only animals I saw was mice, ravens, a couple of ducks, and moose. The ground is partially solid and partially like walking on a waterbed.

I’m happy to be a positive reference for this Alaska moose hunt, but don’t want my contact information to be public. We stopped at a couple of different camps on the way back and they were much the same. Flat, and surrounded by alder thickets.

I don’t have any complaints, but only suggestions and observations:

  • Communication in Bethel and communication with hunters in the field could be improved. I’d rate it a 3.5/5.
  • Weather delays and problems will happen, it is Alaska.
  • My recommendation to anyone is that leave your spotting scope at home and plan on wearing hip boots all day everyday.
  • Don’t plan on trees. This is not a beautiful area of Alaska, but has amazing moose hunting. The biggest frustration a hunter has is not being able to see very far… We could have shot one bull with a bow, however this lake hunt isn’t a great archery hunt. I think it’s better suited for a rifle hunt.
  • My expectations were met. I only needed a transporter, so my needs were filled and I am satisfied with what I received. We were flown into an area with moose and were able to harvest 1/2.
  • How likely would you be to refer Outdoors International booking services to your friends and family? Very Likely.
  • How were your conversations with your agent? Excellent.
  • How was your agent’s pre-hunt correspondence? Good.
  • How was your agent’s post-hunt follow up? Excellent.
  • How savvy/knowledgeable was your agent? Excellent.
  • What would you like to see us offer or do more of or do differently? Nothing.
  • Will you book another trip with us in the future? Yes, will consider unguided trips for various species. I’m interested in an unguided hunt service to get me into a quality area known for having game and getting me out. Support with some logistics is a bonus. If you can find good unguided hunts, I’d be interested.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
