Beautiful fishing hole in Patagonia

The main watersheds are the Simpson and Paloma Rivers, both famous for the finest dry fly fishing in Chile.

Wild brown and rainbow trout are the main species targeted in these rivers, as well as a short, but decent run of King and Coho salmon during the summer months. The salmon are not easily caught on fly, but the runs are significant enough to give the occasional “shot” at one or two on a trip if they are in the river system.

They have private access to rarely fished spring creeks if you enjoy wade fishing. The lodge is also within an hour drive of some temperate rainforest waters where you can sight fish for rising fish or target the aggressive fish with streamers.

Anglers can also float the freestones and navigate the rapids of the Simpson casting to fish with dries or streamers. This region of Chile also has some of the best dry fly, lake fishing in the world for wild browns. The lodge has a couple small “Lagunas” that you can fish after dinner to catch the evening hatch.

Whether you like to wade spring creeks, float on freestone rivers, or cast large dries at cruising fish in a turquoise blue lake, this is a place you will fall in love with.

The Chile-Patagonia fly fishing season starts in early October, ending the first week of May.

  • Early season can provide anglers the opportunity to fish for big migratory, lake run rainbows. This is very good time to swing big streamers and look for big aggressive trophy fish.
  • The dry fly fishing and hatches historically start during early November. With longer and warmer days, the hatches become more intense and the fish start to look up.
  • Between the hundreds of species of beetles, dragonflies, grasshoppers, caddis, mayflies and stoneflies, the dry fly fishing is pretty steady until April.
  • In the Patagonian fall, the weather gets cooler, days are shorter, but the migratory brown trout start to move. There is always a chance to get hooked into one these fish if the weather and water levels cooperate.

This area is a fly fisherman’s dream… I can’t wait to go back again.

  2. Don Long

The beauty of this place is that they and their guides are most accommodating to the needs, abilities and limitations of a beginner and all the way to the veteran professional and world class angler. I hope to return there in the future if time and life afford me the opportunity once again.

  3. Lacey Savage

I would absolutely recommend this lodge to either a fishing addict or pure beginner. There’s always an experienced guide with you and the fish aren’t pressured like most places these days. Doesn’t get much better than total remoteness mixed with five star care, a group of awesome outdoorsy folks and of course the monster browns! Thank you Outdoors International for making my dreams come true!!

  4. Gregory Schneider

On arrival to the lodge I was astounded by the beautiful valley and the lodge nestled in the bottom of it. The service food and wine were incredible. From the lodge there are many types of water to fish like lakes, rivers, spring creeks and located behind the lodge was a productive lagoona to fish. The beautiful mountains dominated the diverse landscape.

  5. Loyd Wildson

Chile was a blast and my fishing withdrawals are starting to set in. I’m thankful Patrick extended the offer for me to join him on this trip. This is definitely a trip with many unforgettable memories, full of great people, fishing and companionship—all things I’m grateful for.

Second time I’ve done this particular trip. The steelhead run was awesome! The food was even better than the first time, which is hard to imagine, and our guide is the best there is! If catching big fish is your thing I highly recommend booking through Outdoors International.

Greg Pope with a Strobel Lake rainbow trout.

I expected big trout on this trip based on all the stories I've read over the years, and I was not disappointed! I broke my own personal best rainbow trout record at least SIX times on this trip, with the biggest being a 16 pound beauty.

I will be going again soon!
