Prince of Wales Island Fishing

The Prince of Wales area is a natural confluence of ocean currents, which attracts huge swarms of bait fish. This makes for some amazing fishing for halibut, rockfish, ling cod and of course salmon.

The salmon gorge themselves here on the way to their spawning grounds. Not only do the fish thrive in this environment but they also share the environment with whales, bears, sea otters and blacktail deer. Exciting wildlife viewing is definitely a part of the adventure.

The Resort

The lodge is an old commercial salmon cannery, originally  built in 1912. It has been recently renovated, and all accommodations have ocean or forest views.

  • Private baths
  • In-room conveniences such as coffee/tea makers, mini-fridges
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Amenities also include daily housekeeping and ice delivery.
  • And every room and suite is within walking distance (or a courtesy golf-cart ride) of the docks, Dining Room, and Lagoon Saloon.
  • Nonsmoker? Ask for one of our nonsmoking rooms.

Getting There

The lodge is a short floatplane flight from Ketchikan, Alaska and only 90 minutes from Seattle, Washington. You can fly in in the morning and be fishing by afternoon.

Bring home boxes of fresh salmon.

Bring home lots of fresh salmon and halibut.

Figure that the price of fresh caught salmon and halibut can be well over $30 a pound. You can bring back two boxes weighing up to 70 pounds.

It is cheaper to go on a trip of a lifetime, stay in 5 star accommodations, eat gourmet meals of fresh caught seafood and delicious steaks with Pacific coast wines to wash it down. If you are an avid fishing junkie like me it is a no brainer.

The expert staff will fillet your catch into the tastiest steaks. Then they’ll be flash frozen and vacuum packed and placed in wet locked boxes for the trip home. When it’s time to go home an onsite Alaska Airlines agent tags your boxes along with your luggage to make it a stress fee departure.

There's a reason I keep booking this steelhead fishing trip!
Second time I’ve done this particular trip. The steelhead run was awesome! The food was even better than the first time, which is hard to imagine, and our guide is the best there is! If catching big fish is your thing I highly recommend booking through Outdoors International.

Greg Pope with a Strobel Lake rainbow trout.

I expected big trout on this trip based on all the stories I've read over the years, and I was not disappointed! I broke my own personal best rainbow trout record at least SIX times on this trip, with the biggest being a 16 pound beauty.

I will be going again soon!
