Mouflon sheep hunting in Hawaii

Mouflon Sheep Hunting the Big Island of Hawaii

The Big Island is home to a herd of free ranging, purebred mouflon sheep, and they are highly sought after game animals, second only to axis deer. They inhabit rugged lava flows at high elevations near the summits of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanos, as well as on the Island of Lanai.

Believed to be one of the original ancestors of all modern sheep, the Mouflon’s origins trace back to the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and Cyprus. However, they have been introduced to various parts of Europe and Hawaii as well.

Introduced to Hawaii in the 1960s, Mouflon Sheep are of medium size, weighing between 55 to 120 pounds. They measure approximately 4 to 5 feet in length and stand 2 to 4 feet tall at the shoulders. Their rough coat serves as excellent camouflage against the reddish dirt and lava rocks of the Hawaiian landscape.

Hunting the Big Island for Mouflon sheep poses a significant challenge due to their sharp eyesight, alertness, and tendency to seek shelter in dense brush when they spot potential threats. Nonetheless, Hawaii Safaris offers excursions designed to increase your chances of successfully capturing one of these highly prized animals in the islands.

Black Hawaiian Sheep Hunting on the Big Island

Black Hawaiian Sheep were originally brought to Hawai’i by Captain Vancouver in the late 1700s. Since then, these sheep have thrived in the upper elevation dryland forests and meadows of the islands. When it comes to trophy hunting, both Black Hawaiian and Mouflon rams are sought after for their impressive horns, which can reach lengths of 30 inches or more.

Wild cattle have a long history on the Big Island of Hawaii. They first arrived as a gift for a king but within a short time they grew to become a widespread pest.

Hunting Vancouver Bulls on the Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii has a rich history with wild cattle AKA Vancouver bulls, dating back to their arrival as a gift for a king. However, what was initially intended as a generous gesture quickly turned into a problem, as the cattle population grew rapidly and became a widespread pest on the island. Despite the challenges they posed, their introduction is believed to have played a role in the emergence of Hawaiian cowboy culture.

In the 21st century, wild cattle continue to present ongoing challenges to the environment and local communities. Their presence can have negative impacts on the ecosystem, including overgrazing and damaging native plant species. Additionally, conflicts may arise between wild cattle and agricultural activities or infrastructure development.

Indeed, the modern Hawaiian wild cattle are a distinct feral breed, setting them apart from conventional domesticated cattle. These wild cattle have developed unique characteristics over time, adapting to the specific conditions of the Hawaiian environment.

Compared to the typical Hereford cattle, the wild breed is smaller in size and boasts longer legs. This physical adaptation likely aids them in navigating the diverse terrains found on the islands. Additionally, they are known for having a stronger temperament, which could be a result of generations of living in a wild, untamed state.

One of the most remarkable features of these wild cattle is their ability to survive extended periods without access to a significant water source. They have adapted to glean water from dew-covered foliage, utilizing the moisture accumulated on leaves and plants during the cooler hours of the day. Moreover, they are resourceful in seeking out any sitting pools of water that may form after a rainstorm, maximizing their chances of staying hydrated in the absence of permanent water sources.

These remarkable adaptations have allowed the Hawaiian wild cattle to thrive in challenging conditions on the islands, making them an integral part of the unique ecosystem and cultural heritage of Hawaii. However, as they continue to roam freely, they pose both challenges and opportunities for the environment and local communities to find ways to coexist and maintain a balanced ecosystem.

Because the state of Hawaii considers wild cattle to have an adverse effect on the Hawaiian forest environment hunting is welcomed. They are not just hunted to control numbers but also as a food source. Wild cattle meat is enjoyed by those locals who make the effort to hunt them, braving the rocky mountain terrain of the forest and the sometimes elusive cattle herds.

A mature Hawaiian bull can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. This means that killing a bull is one thing but carrying the animal out of the forest is quite another. Bulls are also prone to charging when cornered so care is needed, especially as wild cattle tend to be faster and more agile than the average cattle.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
